Prayer To The Sky

Prayer To The Sky   2019
60" x 64.5"  or 152 x 164 cm
Three layers of wool, dyed with indigo or madder, hand stitched.
 The inner layer of madder-dyed wool is revealed with slashes into the top layer.

the inner layers of madder and indigo tint the transparent back layer of white wool into a dream-like atmosphere.

Part of Quilt National 2021, May- September 2021 at the Dairy Barn in Athens Ohio.

In 2024, this quilt was loaned for the exhibition In the Middle of the World when it was mounted in Artsplace, Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia.

red thread hearts

 red thread hearts 2019, a two sided piece (detail side b above)
red thread hearts side a
sixteen women's handkerchiefs, damask table cloth, cotton and silk threads
hand stitched, 76" x 76" or 193 x 193 cm
the women's handkerchiefs are edged with red thread and then appliqued to 20" of damask
the damask squares are then hand sewn together, each sam is hemmed
The central whirl is made with a running stitch and appears the same on both sides of the fabric
 red thread hearts side b, reverse applique, red cotton thread couched with silk thread
circular motifs made with red thread are protection symbols for the mother in  many world cultures

Available through Perivale Gallery, Manitoulin Island, Canada 
A companion piece entitled Beauty, Emotion, Spirit, Soul is similar but stitched with white
silk thread rather than black.  It sold out of the Sudbury exhibition into private collection April 2019.

red catalogne

Red Catalogne
48" square when draped, 48 x 60" when extended
jounral paper, vintage damask table cloth, red cotton threads, hand stitching (couching)

The paper is stitched in horizontal rows, similar to the woven strips of used clothing in the French Canadian bed covers called catalognes.  Strips cut from journal pages filled with dreams, lists, thoughts, and phone call doodles were couched to a linen table cloth and form a safety blanket for the interior world.
