Bidwell

Bidwell
measurements:  66.5 inches high x 53 inches wide  (169 x 135 cm)
An original design inspired by the rural emptiness of the fields and sky of the artist's childhood and current daily surroundings.   The drawing (above) done with French knots refers to the blackbirds that circle over the quiet roads.  Bidwell Road connects Eastern Manitoulin to the centre of the Island.
Materials:  Cotton with bamboo batt
Techniques include pieced half square triangles, reverse applique, tucks, and hand embroidery.
Quilted by hand.

moon cloth _ female figurine

 Moon Cloth     2016     Hand stitched hanging sculpture.
dimensions variable (135 cm h x 50 cm w x 16 cm d)
wool, indigo dye, cotton thread, silk thread, hand stitching   
Worked from the back of the cloth, strips cut from the bottom that were then couched in angles and circles.  The fabric became energized with hand work.
Inspired by the rotation of the moon, ancient female figurines from pre-history and the immensity of our vulnerable inner selves.

Beginning With Time

Beginning With Time: Day  78" x 90" (198 x 228cm) 2015  re-purposed wool blankets and blanket cloth, wool yarns, silk velvet, plant dyes and procion mx dyes.

Beginning With Time: Night  78" x 90"  2015  re-purposed wool blankets, cotton velveteen, wool yarns, alpaca roving, silk velvet, plant dyes and procion mx dyes. Reverse applique, couching, seed stitch, all by hand.

This is a two sided piece.  Both sides are the right side.
Created for the exhibition Wild Pure Aesthetic Wonder
which was curated by Gloria Hickey and Philippa Jones.

The title reminds us that this piece does not have an outer  side, rather it has two inner sides.  No yang, just two yin.
